Why iPhone videos look bad on WhatsApp
iPhones record big files: 4K, often 60 frames per second, and HDR. WhatsApp shrinks that to a small file, and the bigger the gap, the more detail is lost. HDR colour can also be converted badly, making it look washed out.
What's going on
- A 30-second 4K iPhone clip can be over 200 MB. A Status keeps only a few megabytes of it.
- HDR video uses a wider range of brightness and colour than most phones show in WhatsApp, so it has to be converted.
- 60 fps doubles the frames sharing the same small amount of data.
Fixes
- Send to yourself with HD on, then forward to Status, rather than posting straight to Status.
- If you don't need HDR, you can turn off HDR Video in Settings, Camera, Formats.
- Or let Postproof prepare the video for you, HDR included, all on your iPhone.
Questions
Should I record in 1080p instead of 4K?
You can, but it isn't necessary. Recording in 4K and preparing the video before posting keeps more detail.
Postproof prepares your video on your iPhone so it comes through crisp. Free to try.
